ECE IX book of abstracts.pdf (1,8 MB)

Dear EEF members,

In these strange and difficult times when our meetings become exclusively

virtual, we are pleased to announce that the ECE IX - Ninth European

Conference of Egyptologists will still take place. Its leading theme

“Perspectives of Research” has now become a topical and relevant issue

for Egyptologists and archaeologists all over the world.

This new edition of the conference - organized in Italy for the first time -

was intended to take place in Trieste in 2020, but the circumstances

forced us to postpone it, turning it into an online event hosted by the

Department of Humanities of the University of Trieste and co-organized

by the Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures of the Polish

Academy of Sciences.

For more information see:

<https://iksiopan.pl/index.php/en/scientific-activity/conferences/ninth-european-conference-of-egyptologists-ece-ix>

The online conference will thus be hosted by the website www.ece9.it<https://www.ece9.it/>.

There, participants will find the pre-recorded videos of both keynote

lectures and presentations available for viewing from 21st through

26th June, as detailed in the conference program at

<https://iksiopan.pl/images/Konferencje/ECE_IX/ECE_IX_program.pdf>

The website will be accessed only via a username and password,

which will be given upon final registration at

register.ece9.it<https://register.ece9.it/>

The registration to the conference is FREE of charge and must take

place from May 10th to June 5th.

On Saturday 26th June, the meetings for discussing the papers will

take place via Zoom. An invitation email with the links and passwords

will be sent to all the participants the day before.

We hope this conference will be of interest to you and please feel

free to share the news and your impressions,

Dear colleagues,

We are very pleased to announce the symposium Alternative Egyptology
on the occasion of the retirement of Willem van Haarlem, which will be
hosted by the Egyptian Department of the Allard Pierson on the 14th of
April 2021. The symposium aims to assess the impact of alternative
Egyptology and how to relate to it.

It is a cliche, that Ancient Egypt is a never ending source of fascination for many people. The study of Ancient Egypt accelerated in the course of the19th century, beginning with the famous 'Description de l'Égypte' and the following decipherment of hieroglyphs (the start of 'Egyptology') and empirical archaeology in Egypt from the 1880s. During this process a distinction gradually developed between 'mainstream' and 'alternative 'Egyptology, with as main point of controversy theories on the great pyramid of Giza and related topics such as the sphinx and Atlantis. In more recent times, alternative Egyptology has diversified and includes subjects as the Curse of the Pharaoh (especially after the discoveryof the tomb of Tutankhamen), Amarna and the Exodus story as a Christian element, and everything related to the alleged secret knowledge of the ancient Egyptians (Kemetology, Rosicrucians, Freemasonry, etc.).

In this online symposium organised by the Allard Pierson an attempt is made to assess the impact of alternative Egyptology on society and   science and, for mainstream Egyptology, how to relate to it.

The organisers welcome proposals for 20-minute papers with abstracts,
which should be sent to  the organisers of the symposium Ben van den
Bercken MA [B.J.L.vandenBercken@uva.nl] and Dr Willem van Haarlem
[W.M.vanHaarlem@uva.nl] by 14 March 2021. Abstracts should be a
maximum of 250 words and should be accompanied by a short
biographical note.

The organisers are keen to receive abstracts from scholars coming from
a variety of academic perspectives and diverse backgrounds. Topics
might include but are not limited to:

   *   The history of alternative Egyptology
   *   Pseudo-Egyptian religion (e.g. 'Anubis in Damascus' in Oregon;
Isis in Geuserville, California).
   *   Pyramids, pyramidology, Orion mystery, sphinx of Giza
   *   Ancient Egypt and aliens
   *   Freemasonry, Rosicrucians, theosophy (Madame Blavatsky),
Hermetical Order of the Golden Dawn, etc.
   *   Exodus, Moses, Hermes-Trismegistus
   *   Atlantis-mystery
   *   Kemetology

For any further questions do not hesitate to contact the organisers.

Sincerely,

Ben van den Bercken and Willem van Haarlem

The Museo Egizio in Turin is pleased to announce the launch of its new open access journal, Rivista del Museo Egizio. The first volume is now online at https://rivista.museoegizio.it/ .

The Rivista del Museo Egizio promotes, gathers and disseminates research on the collection of the Turin museum from the standpoint of a variety of disciplines, ranging from archaeology to philology, and from archive studies to restoration.

It also welcomes articles  on archaeological sites investigated by the Museo Egizio in Turin today or in the past, as well as contributions on topics of indirect relevance to the museum’s collection (for example, because they also deal with artifacts in the Museo Egizio, or with a class of artifacts also represented in its collection, with history of Egyptology topics intersecting the history of the Turin collection, with the museology of Egyptian collections, etc.).

The journal takes full advantage of its online format, offering advanced article navigation functions, high-resolution color images, the possibility to add comments to published articles, and additional content such as RTI images, 3D models, and direct links to other online resources. The published images of objects in the Museo Egizio are made available to readers free of charge under a Creative Commons license. Traditionally formatted PDFs of the articles are also available for download  and printing.

The Rivista del Museo Egizio is a peer-reviewed academic journal targeting a readership mainly composed of Egyptologists. It publishes articles in four languages: Italian, English, French, and German. Its large multinational advisory board is representative of the research community the journal aims to serve.

We are now calling for papers for the second volume (2018). For further information, see our submission page: https://rivista.museoegizio.it/pubblica-con-noi/ .

The Crossroads III – A Stranger in the House. Foreigners in Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern Societies of the Bronze Age

We are happy to announce the third international Crossroads conference – “The Crossroads III – A Stranger in the House. Foreigners in Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern Societies of the Bronze Age”, which will be held at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University (Prague) between September 10 and 13, 2018.

The main objective of the conference is to enhance our understanding of “foreignness” in ancient societies of the Near East and Egypt during the period defined by the end of the Chalcolithic period and the end of the Late Bronze Age. In order to obtain a well-balanced insight, we would like the topic to be treated from an archaeological, historical, iconographic and philological point of view. We believe that bringing together archaeologists, philologists, as well as historians and other experts, is not merely highly desirable, but also a necessity for gaining a deeper insight into the historical, social, cultural and economic aspects of “foreignness” of the respective regions (Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Levant, Egypt) at this particular moment in time.

We hope that the idea of working along the topic of “foreignness” will provide for some fascinating lectures and discussions. We are sure many of the papers will touch upon several aspects of “foreignness” but we would be very much interested in the following questions and/or topics:

  •  Who is a foreigner in the respective society?
  • How do we recognise foreigners in ancient societies?
  • What is the role of foreigners in the society?
  • Interaction between the foreigners and indigenous population(s).
  • Foreigners as enemies of the state.
  • Foreigners as allies.
  • An experience of being a foreigner.
  • Foreign people and foreign gods.
  • Communication patterns between individuals and societies.

The Crossroads III Conference organising committee invites proposals for papers and posters relating to all above-mentioned aspects of “foreignness”. The official language of the conference will be English and each lecture should be 25 minutes long with an additional 5 minutes allowed for discussion. In order to assess your paper proposal, you are expected to submit an abstract of your presentation and a short CV (400–500 words in total) by February 1, 2018. All proposals will be reviewed by the scientific committee and the authors will be notified of the results by March 1, 2018. The deadline for submitting your paper to the proceedings is set for two months after the conference. All the papers will be peer-reviewed and the volume will be published in 2019. Conference fee: 90€ (standard) and 60€ (students).

More information can be found on the website of the conference or at Facebook.

We are looking forward to receive a proposal of your paper or poster. Please submit your proposal by email to crossroads.conference.2018@gmail.com

New Online Repository of Maps and Geospatial Data for the
Middle East

The Center for Ancient Middle Eastern Landscapes (CAMEL Lab) at
the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago would like
to announce that a substantial subset of its digital holdings
of maps and geospatial data are now available for online public
search and download.

Thanks to the funding of a 2014-2016 IMLS grant, geo-referenced
versions of historical and modern maps and satellite imagery have
been included in the Oriental Institute’s ever-expanding
Integrated Database, available at

To access maps and geospatial data specifically, choose “CAMEL”
from the first drop-down list.

The Integrated Database does not yet include a spatial search
function or map interface. For tips on how to use text-based
queries to locate specific datasets, see

Once you have located a georeferenced dataset of interest, an
interactive map with up-to-date satellite imagery embedded in
the dataset’s page will allow you to see the spatial coverage
of the dataset.

CAMEL is a research laboratory at the Oriental Institute of
the University of Chicago that is dedicated to the long-durée
study of Middle Eastern landscapes, environments and cultural
heritage, primarily through archaeological fieldwork, satellite
imagery analysis, and spatial analysis within Geographical
Information Systems (GIS).

CAMEL’s database includes over 20,000 unique objects of spatial
data that relate to the archaeology, anthropology, and history
of the Middle East, almost 9000 of which are now publicly
available. The main strengths of our collection are:

      ·      Digitized and georeferenced versions of historical
maps held by the Oriental Institute

      ·      Historical aerial photographs of particular
archaeological sites and landscapes

      ·      Georeferenced historical satellite imagery covering
large swaths of the Middle East, primarily from the Cold War-era
Corona spy satellite program

For questions and comments, please contact the CAMEL director,
Emily Hammer (ehammer@uchicago.edu) or Foy Scalf, Head of the
Integrated Database Project (scalffd@uchicago.edu).

Leaflet for participants8mail.pdf (4792826)

Dear Friends,

Hope your transition into 2014 is smooth and promising.

It is time to plan for the upcoming First Encounter with the Mediterranean Soul.
As most of you are aware, the seminar will take place in La casa dei pesci at San Felice Circeo (Mount Circeo), the house built by my grandfather Arch. Michele Busiri Vici. It will start on July 10th at noon and end on Sunday July 13th after lunch.

« The Encounters of the Mediterranean Soul » are a seed, an idea to bring to life a new way of experiencing, understanding, nurturing and sharing the many sophisticated collective meanings that lie behind the Circe Mountain and the Mediterranean sea: History, Mythology, Architecture, and obviously Depth Psychology, without forgetting the exquisite food, the sea, the sun and the wild surrounding nature.

Is there a “Mediterranean Soul”?

Thinking and experiencing the Mediterranean, in search of its deep meaning for and within our life today, is the goal.

4 days of conversations on the Mediterranean, and of full immersion in the Mediterranean nature, in its perfumes, colors and tastes.

3 main themes: History, Mythology, Analytic Psychology

3 main “guides” for our joint conversations:

Maria Helena Trindade Lopes: Executive Coordinator of the Department of History in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the U.N.L. Egyptologist and Full Professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, MH Trindade Lopes is the author of 8 books and 100 articles.

Evans Lansing Smith: Ph.D., Chair and Core Faculty, Mythological Studies Program, Pacifica Graduate Institute (home of Joseph Campbell archives and the only advanced degree Mythology program in the world). He is the author of 9 books and numerous articles on comparative literature and mythology.

Luigi Zoja: Jungian analyst, former President of IAAP, teaching at the CG Jung Institute in Zurich and author of many books in English and Italian amongst which:  The Father, Routledge, 2001; The Global Nightmare. Jungian Perspectives on September 11 (ed.), Daimon, 2002; Cultivating the Soul, Free Association, 2005.

Enclosed please find the leaflet with the overall information and the two options of accommodation.

At this point It is important that those of you who have said they wish to participate confirm.
The seminar is planned to be for 20 participants and for those who wish to extend the invitation to friends whom could be interested, this is the time to do it.

The deadline for registration is February 15th at the latest to make sure on my side I am able to confirm the rooms with the negotiated fares.

Please don't hesitate to be in touch by mail or phone (+33619694053) for any question or requests

Looking forward to sharing with you what I hope will be an enriching and inspiring experience.

Warm regards

Alessandra
